Cleaning Day and the Value of a Dollar

Today is cleaning day at my son's preschool. Parents and kids spend a couple hours cleaning, organizing and getting things in order after the school year. I think this is great. It gets everyone involved and reminds us that all work is important and worth doing well. It reminds children that they can and should help take care of their own environment because, eventually, no one is going to do it for them.

My three-year-old already participates at home. He dusts the floors. He uses the little hand vac to suck up the crumbling brick mortar that is a constant problem in our turn-of-the-century home. He puts away his own toys (though not always willingly). He even does extra things for a small fee. He worked for 10 days to earn enough money to buy a Spiderman alarm clock. Work, value and money are extremely important things. I want him to see how they are related as quickly as possible. Money is not the root of all evil. It is a tool that can be used any way we choose.
