Learning Can Happen Anywhere!

Today was an amazing school day.  After yesterday's mayhem, I felt that we needed a change of scenery.  We happen to live very close to the Cincinnati Nature Center and it is a gorgeous day, so we left the house at a little after 8:00 AM.  We explored, played, solved problems and had tons of questions about everything we saw.

We were all just happy to be outside and see something new.  This was our first trip to the nature center, and there is so much to see and do.  We spent all of our time in the 'Playscape' today, but we know we'll be back for trails and homeschool classes that they offer for only $5.00 per student.    We'll definitely become members in the Spring.  It's $11.00 per visit for the three of us, but only $75.00 per year for the family membership.   It's so worth it.  We explored a stream, climbed rocks, added onto a log cabin, dug in the dirt, chased chipmunks, got wet and muddy and had a great time.  We talked about the changing leaves, gazed up into the canopy of the forest and imagined how old it is.  We counted the rings on a tree stump to see how old it was when it was cut down.

When we got home, we still had time to spend in our classroom.  The boys were a little wound up, so we had a snack and a drink first.  Then, we did about an hour of work.  It was plenty.  They were ready for lunch and some quiet time, which is exactly what we're doing now.  Kieran is napping and Soren and I are being quiet.  Maybe he's thinking about everything we saw today.  I'm not sure.  We all need time to think our own thoughts and let our minds be still.  We've done enough talking and learning for now.  The time we spend thinking about what we've done is just as valuable as the time we spent doing the activity.  It's only then that we make sense of what we learned, come up with additional questions and just enjoy the memory.
